Six Facet Surveys
NHS property appraisals for safe, compliant and functional facilities

Why you need a Six Facet Survey
Six Facet Surveys are crucial to maintaining safe, compliant and functional facilities, identifying backlog and informing ERIC information for the NHS.
The Six Facet Survey forms the ‘core’ estates information required by HBN 00-08 (NHS Estate code). Historically this has always been regarded as the ‘minimum data set’ of information necessary on which to base intelligent decisions about the future of an estate. It provides good baseline information for an Estates Strategy, provides backlog information and can assist property transfer and is consistent with the updated NHS Premises Assurance Model (PAM) and the updated ERIC Returns and the Carter and Naylor Reviews.
The Six Facet Survey is more than just a checklist; it is the backbone of intelligent estate management within the NHS, it forms the core estate information required by the NHS. The survey is crucial for:
By identifying and prioritising risks, the survey aids in planning backlog to ensure safety and compliance.
Accurate assessment of the estate’s condition facilitates better budgeting and resource allocation.
The survey supports accurate ERIC (Estates Returns Information Collection) returns, assisting Trusts with the ability to meet the new required standards.
Six Facet Survey
The Six Facet Survey is a multifaceted approach encompassing surveys and reviews, each conducted by specialised teams experienced in their respective fields.
Each facet is critical to the maintenance and strategic planning of NHS estates:
A comprehensive assessment of the estate's internal and external building fabric, including mechanical and electrical systems.
A thorough check of compliance factors, including fire safety, health and safety, legionellosis and asbestos.
A review of how efficiently and intensively space is used, including guidance on areas for optimisation.
An evaluation of how well the facility supports its intended purpose and functions, including internal space relationships, location, layout and support facilities.
An assessment focusing on the quality of the environment provided by the building, including comfort and design asthetics.
An evaluation of the building's environmental impact, assessing energy efficiency, water, waste and transport.
